Paragraph 1
Communication barriers refer to factors preventing communication. It creates difficulties in understanding information in communication. In Hong Kong, there are three specific barriers to communication, including noise, time, and people not listening.
Paragraph 2
To begin with, noise leads to problems in understanding what is being said. The situation worsens on big busy roads like Nathan Road, with lots of vehicles and people. The frustrating noise, apart from making people fail to catch what is being said, increases stress levels in people, whether they are on the phone or elsewhere, as well as their blood pressure.
Paragraph 3
Another barrier is time. Due to the hectic lifestyle in Hong Kong, people often seem to be in a hurry and less willing to talk. People will thus feel neglected and disrespected when being ignored or interrupted during a conversation. Meanwhile, businesses may suffer from losing customers if their questions are not answered.
Paragraph 4
People not listening to others is a barrier to communication as well. Lacking time is not the only reason. Sometimes people show very little respect for newcomers from other places, making them feel unimportant.
Paragraph 5
According to a research article titled “Tracking Hong Kong Newcomers,” more than 80% respond that their children do not have the opportunity to make friends. It is the result of people not listening to others.
Paragraph 6
Regarding communication barriers, the Cultural Commons carried out an online survey. The following are the results of the survey.

Eye Contact
Eye contact is the most common non-verbal communication. One problem associated with it is the length of time of having eye contact. In different countries, a long time of eye contact has various meanings. It can mean that you want a fight or challenge the one you look at. Sometimes it means you are interested in what others say or that you want a romantic relationship with the person. Thus, one advice on eye contact is to be aware of what you do with your eyes and the situation that you are in.
Arms
Folding your arms sometimes gives people a negative impression. According to a survey done by Amotachi in 2008, 40% of respondents thought folded arms mean rejection and disagreement, and 17% of them felt confused about it. To avoid confusion, listeners ought to revert to a neutral position such as with your hands loosely clasped in front of them and not to fold your arms.
Standing
De Frietas (2006) found that how people stand affects how the listener perceives the speaker when giving presentations. In some cases, candidates failed their job interview due to the way they were standing when asked to give a presentation. One common problem is that the speaker will look over-confident or arrogant when putting your hands on your hips. Instead, relaxing your arms and letting them hang by your side will make you look more friendly person.

Paragraph 1
As there are newcomers to Hong Kong from places all over the world, everyday citizens should pay better attention to the group for better social cohesion. In fact, newcomers find practical difficulties when they arrive in the city.
Paragraph 2
Apart from adapting to the lifestyle in Hong Kong, research shows they have great difficulties in accessing free medical care (90%), a place to live (88%), a school for their children (83%), and free legal advice (82%). Parents also find it challenging to fill out school application forms when they search for schools for their kids. Limited English language mainly acts as barriers as they know very little due to Chinese. Meanwhile, 87% of interviewees believed that their children fail to get the opportunity to make new friends.
Paragraph 3
Although the newcomers are encountering lots of difficulties and pressure, the help available from the community in Hong Kong alleviates the problem effectively.
Paragraph 4
An article from the Kowloon Herald tells the story of various citizens reaching out with their helping hands to the newcomers. Local lawyers, Venny Wong and Theresa Lam, from Char and Wang Legal Company, decided to provide pro bono services to newcomers through a community-based legal advice scheme to provide free legal advice. Enrique Ramirez, an estate agent, also works on providing a commission-free service to help minorities find their new home.
Paragraph 5
Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Tourism Board has produced a new MTR map for newcomers to find their way and adapt to the city’s life. There are also four doctors offering free clinics once a week in Mongkok, and websites for newcomers to show information about places in Hong Kong.
Paragraph 6
The Cultural Commons is a non-governmental organization providing numerous services for newcomers to Hong Kong, including writing translation of formal documents, foreign interpreter service, form filling service, child care services for working mothers, introductions to local sports teams, providing important contact numbers, and sightseeing guides for Kowloon and the Outlying Islands.
Paragraph 7
Also, a local youth club is run by the organization in Sham Shui Po for kids to make new friends from different places.
Paragraph 8
Most interestingly, the organization is holding an event named Fun Day in Kowloon Park on 15th April. The activities include a lucky draw and a talk by the author of “An Immigrant’s Song,” Lionel Chan. People can have the chance to meet others from different cultures and buy the new book of Lionel Chan, other than major bookstores, to help newcomers adapt into the city.
