Here come some advice for young people or school leavers if you have ever thought of being a veterinary nurse.
Paragraph 2
First, the job of veterinary nurses involves handling animals and doing clinical duties such as taking blood correctly from animals. We provide care and support for animals and even do minor surgical procedures. The qualities of being a veterinary nurse are that you have to love animals and have good communication skills. It’s because other than taking care of animals, you also have to interact with people, like answering clinical emails.

Second, for qualifications, you’ll also study communication, and the course includes a six-month internship. You can choose from a full-time degree, diploma, or certificate program. For future prospects, one of our recent graduates has got a placement as a veterinary nurse in a horse clinic. Also, you can choose to continue to study a diploma course.

Lastly, there are challenges of being a vet. We have to learn not to be nervous with animals. The biggest challenge is that we have to develop a strategy to cope with when a sick animal dies. It’s a tough one. Other than the aforementioned things, shifting work can sometimes be hard. Sometimes, we will be on call at night. So, make sure you go to bed on time!

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to our open day! Today, we are going to talk about virtual pets. First, let me give a brief background about it.

Virtual pet is a digital application which stimulates the online experience of having a real pet. The usage of virtual pets has similarly increased with widespread, cheaper access to the internet. According to the statistics from Online Today magazine in November 2013, there are over 26% of people who aged over 65 who are virtual pet users, which is the second largest proportion followed by youngsters. So, how do old people use virtual pets?

In Hong Kong, Y’Ev has examined the use of virtual pets among adult users aged 60 and over. Findings reveal that people keep virtual pets for various reasons, including improving relationships with younger generations and limitations in the living environment. A participant has mentioned that virtual pets have started out with her and her grandson, which makes her feel wonderful. Another respondent said that his apartment building does not allow keeping pets. As a result, he got an online pet.

In Florida, USA, some retired people who aged over 60 mentioned that they got into online stuff like virtual pets in order to keep their minds active. They do usual things with their virtual pets. They think it’s better than spending their time on those card playing game sites. Moreover, there is a virtual pet expert, Perry Schmidt, who pointed out that some owners have created super pets like Draglion—a cross between a lion and a Komodo dragon. This shows that elderly owners gain lots of excitement about keeping a virtual pet.

Other than that, with the advancement in technologies nowadays, the older generation can access the internet easily and do simple things online. There are virtual pet owners, who extend to the elderly, who have sent messages to the Elderly News Generation mentioning their online behaviors. One of them said that he has built up an extensive breeding exchange program of virtual birds online and swapped them with other birds that he hasn’t got. Another mentioned that he has about 6 online accounts to sell virtual pets to earn money. Isn’t that creative?

Paragraph 1
I am writing in response to the letter from Mr. W. Squees, which criticizes the Kowloon Exotic Pets Hospital. In the letter, Mr. W. Sequeers has mentioned that she felt angry because this hospital supports the exotic pet trade, which is only concerned about making money. Moreover, the trade in some exotic pets is having serious effects. Here are responses from the Kowloon Exotic Pets Hospital, as I am one of the assistants working there.
Paragraph 2
First, we are actually not supporting the exotic pet trade. We often do voluntary work for the community in Hong Kong. Eight months ago, we started a scheme called Operation Gar, which helps people by volunteering our services to relocate gens to Ocean Park. We also provide free workshops to educate people about the threat to the ecosystem if something is released into the wild. Actually, we noticed the notorious alligator gars which threatened the local native fish. When the gars become dominant, we would help out to remove it and place it in another destination.
Paragraph 3
On the other hand, we also provide a free program for people to take in all kinds of unwanted exotic pets and look after them until a new home can be found. We are not doing this for money as there aren’t any charges involved. We take in any animal, no questions asked, and it’s all completely free of charge. There shouldn’t be any exotic animals which are homeless.
Paragraph 4
This year, our Orphan Program was again run as a complimentary service to the community. For the cases handled in the recent 5 years, the number of cases has increased significantly from 20 in 2009 to 120 in 2013. Actually, if a pet owner no longer wants their pets, our programs can definitely give a helping hand to them.

One of our duties is raiding pet shops throughout Hong Kong in crimes related to exotic pets. Such operations will continue in the next financial year. Other than that, we also provide exhibitions to spread the message across the community that the incidence of disease with exotic pets is low if care is taken. Education is essential to change people’s minds.
