To start with, through these relationships can we share our feeling and gain emotional support. I’m pretty sure what you want most when you’re upset is the comfort from your friends. Indeed, as all of us are social animals, interpersonal relationships play a crucial role in our daily life. In essence, in a relationship we benefit from each other, akin but not equivalent to the concept of exchange in economics. In a friendship, we support and offer assistance for one another. Besides, we can get to learn about social skills, which are no doubt the key to success. For example, we may learn from a relationship with our classmates how to ask for help without others having a feeling of being ordered. When interacting with others, we can also gain a deeper understanding of how to better communicate and negotiate. In addition, this also enhances our self-esteem. I’m quite sure you haven’t pondered over these benefits but I think it we will be more confident and when gaining peer recognition and acceptance, won’t we? This, to put it in the jargons of Liberal Studies, consolidates our sense of fulfillment and security, thereby enhancing our self-esteem.
